At eDeaf, we are committed to reducing the high unemployment rate among Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in South Africa by delivering SETA-accredited learnerships and skills programmes. Our training is fully accessible, delivered in South African Sign Language (SASL), and designed to meet the unique needs of Deaf learners.

We focus on five high-demand industries where Deaf talent can thrive. Each area combines theoretical learning, practical workplace experience, and foundational support to prepare learners for sustainable employment. Corporate partners sponsor these programmes, aligning with B-BBEE requirements while gaining skilled, loyal team members.

Our five focus areas

01.

Wholesale and Retail

Learners gain real-world experience through practical on-site training with trusted Wholesale & Retail (W&R) partners. This learnership develops essential skills in customer service, merchandising, stock control, sales techniques, and store operations.

Why it suits Deaf learners: The hands-on, visual nature of retail work pairs perfectly with our SASL-supported training. No reliance on spoken communication – learners focus on practical tasks and build confidence in fast-paced environments.

Outcomes: NQF Level 2–4 qualifications leading to roles such as sales assistant, merchandiser, store operator, or team leader. Many graduates secure permanent positions with our partner retailers.

02.

Hygiene and Cleaning

This programme equips learners with key competencies for in-demand hygiene and cleaning services across corporate, industrial, and public sectors. Training covers health & safety protocols, specialised cleaning techniques, environmental management, and quality control.

Why it suits Deaf learners: Clear, visual demonstrations and checklists make the training highly accessible. The work is structured and results-driven, allowing Deaf employees to excel without barriers.

Outcomes: Accredited qualifications at NQF Level 1 to 3, opening doors to stable roles in facilities management, contract cleaning companies, hotels, hospitals, and offices. These positions offer consistent demand and growth opportunities and is in partnership with Empact!

03.

Logistics and Trucking

Learners receive targeted training in supply chain management, warehousing, inventory control, transport operations, and road safety. Programmes align with the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) and include practical exposure to logistics hubs and distribution networks.

Why it suits Deaf learners: Visual mapping tools, safety signage, and hands-on equipment training create an inclusive learning environment. Deaf individuals often bring exceptional attention to detail and spatial awareness to these roles.

Outcomes: NQF-aligned certifications preparing graduates for positions such as warehouse operator, logistics coordinator, truck assistant, or fleet support. The sector’s rapid growth ensures strong employment pathways.

04.

Manufacturing

This focus area builds skills in production processes, assembly techniques, quality assurance, machinery operation, and workplace safety. Training occurs in partnership with manufacturing SETA-accredited providers and includes on-site placements in factories and production facilities.

Why it suits Deaf learners: Repetitive, visual, and task-oriented work aligns naturally with Deaf communication styles. Our programmes emphasise safety visuals and team collaboration through SASL.

Outcomes: Various qualification levels help empower Deaf learners, and lead to roles like production operator, assembler, quality controller, or line supervisor. Graduates contribute to South Africa’s growing manufacturing sector with reliable, high-performance skills.

05.

Office-based and Omni-Centres

Learners develop professional office skills, end-user computing, data processing & management, administrative procedures, and customer support in modern omni-channel environments.

Why it suits Deaf learners: Fully digital and visual workflows (emails, chat, databases) remove auditory barriers. We integrate IT fundamentals to ensure learners are confident in today’s hybrid workplaces.

Outcomes: NQF Level 3–5 qualifications (often incorporating End-User Computing) for roles such as admin assistant, data capture, customer support agent, or office coordinator. Many of our Deaf learners progress into corporate administration or specialised Deaf-friendly omni-centres.
